TBH I have no idea what it does, how it works, or how to wire it.

I keep messing with it until I stop blowing bulbs. I've put these on 3 different bikes with points, and been happy.

I've had two of these and neither of them regulated correctly with the wiring diagram suggestions listed below.
I tried every pin combination humanly possible and none of them functioned as a 12v regulator. Maybe some are internally different than others? Who knows

But good news, your boy Jon has cracked the Da Vinci code. There was a wiring diagram that used to come with these that no longer exists. I was lucky enough to find it on MA.

/====(4)
/  ====(3)
O =====::]
\  ====(2)      Ground
\====(1)        Light coil hot lead / lighting wire harness.

Pin 2 gets grounded and then pin 1 is both your stator lighting coil hot lead and the wire that is gonna go to whatever harness you have for your lights. So pin 1 is gonna have 2 wires theoretically. Or maybe 1 wire if your lighting wire harness is already spliced with the stator lighting coil wire.

Sorry if I worded that poorly. It'll make sense once it's in front of you I swear.

2 of 5 It's a regulator that regulates, but doesn't recti May 27, 2019

I was only able to get AC out of this thing, produced no DC voltages (verified with both auto-ranging DVM and O-scope).

Borrowing a bit of artwork from a previous post, I tried the following combinations on an AV-7, Le parties CDI, 1/4 throttle.  YMMV.  All voltages identified below we're measured as positive (+) values.

Config numero uno (lighting coil on pin 1):

/====(4)[ 0
/  ====(3)[- 12.7 VAC
O =====::]
\  ====(2)[ 6.5 VAC
\====(1)[- lighting coil

Config numero two-o:
/====(4)[ 0
/  ====(3)[ 8.7 VAC
O =====::]
\  ====(2)[ lighting coil
\====(1)[ 8.7 VAC

Config ##3:

/====(4)[ 0 volts
/  ====(3)[ lighting coil
O =====::]
\  ====(2)[ 6.4 VAC
\====(1)[ 12.6 VAC

Config ##4:
/====(4)[ lighting coil
/  ====(3)[ 0
O =====::]
\  ====(2)[ 0
\====(1)[ 0

Configs #1 or 3 are probably what you'd want if you're looking for a regulator.  Guessing pin #2 is for battery?
Again, YM(and V)MV.  NO DC (rectified) output :(
