Every place is different. Position your bike directly over the lines cut in the asphalt*...if that doesn't work in your city, get a magnet. You can get one for free out of old hard drives (use your Torx bit), or buy this.
The magnet won't work by itself, it also needs some iron/steel to trigger the sensors. Just be aware of that if you try to test the magnet by itself.
*If there's a center line cut into the rectangle, position over that line.

when coming to a red light, i always just ride up on the sidewalk so i can push the crosswalk button. i guess this would look less cracked-out

trust me, ive tried everything, tipping bike, moving back, forth, side to side, even having more than one bike at the signal. doesnt work and i know for a fact.
this will actually make the light sensor pick you up. and you wont have to look ridiculous trying to do it.
you'd probably have to lay down at least 3 bikes completely on the floor for a signal to pick you up since these are designed for motorcycles which means sensors dont even pick up motorcycles.
yuppp it's been read on moped army, this stuff is an issue!
